Journalist Nathan Gissing has claimed that teenager Derrick Abu is now set to leave Chelsea on a free transfer.

He took to Twitter to claim that the 19-year-old is going to be joining new Championship side Southampton at the end of the month.

Abu made 12 appearances across three competitions for the young Blues last season, however supporters nearly got a bigger taste of what he was about.

Manager last season, Graham Potter, reportedly called the player up to training a number of times as part of his regime of giving academy stars the chance to impress amongst the recognised first teamers.

While supporters will not thank the former Brighton man for much, giving Lewis Hall his debut and turning him into a regular in the first team squad is something they will for sure be grateful for.

Abu to leave Chelsea

However, Gissing has now confirmed that it has not worked out in a similar way for Abu, and he will be on his way out of the club when his contract comes to an end.

He said: “Exclusive: Derrick Abu is set to join Southampton on a free transfer, whose contract with Chelsea expires at the end of this month.

“Abu also had interest from Germany, Holland and other English clubs, but opted for the Saints. Medical: 1st July.

Losing a talented youngster for free is never a good moment for the club, particularly with how much focus has been on young stars since Todd Boehly took over the club.

One piece of good news however has been the news that Charlie Webster is only set to be leaving the club on loan, when it was seen before that he would be leaving permanently.
