Enzo Maresca reportedly did something quite unusual when it came to one of Chelsea’s signings in this summer transfer window.
Chelsea have not messed around with their transfer business at Stamford Bridge, completing numerous different signings to strengthen for both now and the future.
The Blues have already confirmed the additions of Filip Jorgensen, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman, Tosin Adarabioyo, Renato Veiga and Caleb Wiley since the end of last season. Estevao Willian has been named as a new recruit for 2025, too.
Enzo Maresca is the new Chelsea head coach tasked with trying to work out the best formula with this large squad. Speaking via Chelsea’s YouTube channel when he first joined in the summer, Maresca insisted the Blues squad is very talented.

Enzo Maresca played role in Marc Guiu signing
The Athletic journalist Liam Twomey told the ‘Straight Outta Cobham’ podcast that Chelsea boss Maresca was a factor in the club signing Marc Guiu from Barcelona this summer. He’s explained it’s unusual for managers to be so heavily involved in youth signings, but he played his part in the 18-year-old striker joining in a £5m deal (BBC) from Barcelona.
Twomey said: “We are also told that Enzo Maresca did play a role in Marc Guiu’s signing which is not necessarily usual when you are talking about a 17-18 year old.
“So, he certainly has some clarity on Guiu and his game before he arrived at Stamford Bridge.”
Guiu’s started the opening two matches of pre-season, impressing in both, so perhaps it’s not the greatest surprise to hear the head coach had a say in his addition.
The Spanish teenager leads the line with great pace and physicality for someone so young. In a recent interview with Spanish newspaper Sport, Marc Cucurella called Chelsea teammate Guiu a “great player”.
What will happen with Marc Guiu next season?
It’s going to be interesting to see where Guiu fits into Chelsea’s plans next year once the pre-season schedule is done.
Speaking via Football.London in a recent interview, Maresca suggested Guiu will stay in Chelsea’s squad. That’ll be some achievement for the teenager if he’s catapulted straight into the first-team picture during his first year with the club.
He’s certainly not looked out of place at the very start of his Blues career, albeit we’re just in pre-season still. It would be interesting to see the athletic centre-forward by the time the 2024/25 season comes around in a few weeks time.
