Chelsea star Christopher Nkunku has certainly had an up and down start to the new season.
Christopher Nkunku, 26, has been bright in the Conference League so far with two goals in two games during the play-off tie against Servette. However, the versatile French attacker is still yet make his mark in the Premier League, starting just one of the opening three top-flight matches.
His debut season at Stamford Bridge last year was largely wrecked by injury, so it’s refreshing to see him fit and playing for Chelsea at the start of this campaign. It does feel like Blues head coach Enzo Maresca is still trying to work out the best way to use him, though.
Speaking on his podcast recently, John Obi Mikel suggested Nkunku’s best position is as a No.10.

Chelsea plan with Christopher Nkunku
Journalist Matt Law has provided an update on Chelsea’s Nkunku and his current position at Stamford Bridge.
He’s explained that the Blues currently consider the Frenchman as the understudy to Nicolas Jackson in the striker position, with Joao Felix third in the pecking order.
Speaking on The London Is Blue podcast, Law said: “What I have been told of how it shapes down at the moment is I think the pecking order now will them not having signed a striker will pretty much be Jackson and then Nkunku would have to play there if Jackson had a problem. They think he can play there, particularly under the way Maresca plays. And then after Nkunku, Felix.”
The Christopher Nkunku conundrum
We’re sure most fans would love to see Nkunku in Chelsea’s main starting line-up, but fitting him into the side is a difficult challenge right now.
It’s good to learn the club sees him as the main back-up option to Jackson as the central striker because he’s a clinical finisher. In the meantime, can the Blues fit him into the XI on the wing or a bit deeper? They are roles he’s certainly capable of playing with his versatility.
When fit, Cole Palmer appears to have locked down the No.10 position to himself, so we don’t anticipate any player budging him from there.
It looks like Nkunku will have no issues getting game time in the Conference League tournament, but surely he’ll want to be nailing down a spot in the Premier League team and impressing in the best XI.
