Trevor Sinclair reckons that Romelu Lukaku owes his Chelsea teammates an apology in the aftermath of controversial comments he made earlier this month.

Lukaku is the hot topic of conversation this week around Stamford Bridge after a turbulent time.

First of all, the 28-year-old striker scored for a second consecutive game in the 1-1 draw with Brighton to suggest he’s getting back to his best. However, comments he made earlier in December have come to light and upset a lot of people.

Lukaku, speaking to Sky Italy, admitted he’s “not very happy” with his current situation at Chelsea. He explained in the interview his frustration regarding the formation, adding that he would like to play for his former club Inter Milan again at some point in the future.

TalkSPORT pundit Sinclair has heavily criticised the Chelsea forward for his comments and suggested he apologises to teammates, the owner and supporters.

“For him to come out with those comments, I think he should be apologising to the Chelsea fans. That’s so disrespectful to the Chelsea fans,” Sinclair said.

“I think that’s so disrespectful to the Chelsea manager. I’d be astounded if he hadn’t had a conversation with Thomas Tuchel about this. He might not have got the answer he wanted but you don’t come out in public and say this.

“I think it’s disrespectful to his teammates and I think it’s disrespectful to the owner.”

“He’s 28 years old. A lot of Chelsea’s front line will look up to Lukaku, I think he’s let them all down.”

Will Chelsea players still respect Lukaku?

Of course, we don’t know the internal conversations that are ongoing between Lukaku and staff. You can bet Tuchel will be grilled about the striker’s comments in Friday’s press conference.

It’s crucial that the issue is fixed quickly within the squad so it doesn’t impact performances on he pitch, though.

Callum Hudson-Odoi called Lukaku a “massive player” earlier this month. In addition, Mason Mount called him a “top player” this week.

It’s going to be intriguing to see how the club deal with the situation. Hopefully, they and Lukaku can address it and draw a line under it today.
