‘Lightweight’: Paul Merson doesn’t think Chelsea should sign £155k-a-week player they reportedly want

Paul Merson has described Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix as “lightweight” and doesn’t think Chelsea should sign him.

Felix, 23, is a young Portuguese attacker linked with a potential move to Stamford Bridge.

Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Chelsea are tempted to sign the Atletico Madrid forward on loan with an option to buy.

The £155,000-a-week star has shown he’s a potential future superstar, which is why Atletico splashed out £113million to sign him from Benfica a few years ago.

However, 34 goals in 130 appearances for the Spanish club is a little under par for someone like him.

Merson described Felix as lightweight

Paul Merson has reacted to Chelsea’s speculation with Felix by suggesting the Atletico forward would be a bad signing.

“I’ve seen Joao Felix linked with them but I think he’d be a bit lightweight in this league and a bit too similar to Kai Havertz. They need to find someone more dynamic who can bully defenders and score goals. But those are hard to find,” Merson wrote for the Daily Star.

In our view, Felix has the technical capability and potential to be a big success in any division. We can see why you may throw the “lightweight” tag at him right now, though.

Many Chelsea fans would probably agree with Merson that they’d prefer an out-and-out No.9 to join the club rather than another flair attacker.

It feels like Graham Potter is still trying to work out his preferred forward line at Stamford Bridge, so let’s wait and see how it shapes up in 2023.
