‘Lost a bit of pace’: ESPN pundit thinks struggling £45m Chelsea player has actually got slower

ESPN pundit Stewart Robson suggests Chelsea’s Timo Werner has lost some pace in his game.

Werner, who cost the Blues £45million from RB Leipzig two years ago, has now completed two full seasons at Stamford Bridge.

Unfortunately, the 26-year-old attacker has not lived up to all his expectations.

The German forward has 23 goals in 89 Chelsea appearances so far. In contrast, he netted 95 times in 159 Leipzig games.

Werner has lost pace

ESPN’s Robson has given a critical assessment of Werner’s time at Chelsea, even suggesting that some of his speed has started to go.

“Timo Werner over the couple of years he’s been at the club just hasn’t done enough,” Robson told ESPN.

“He’s not made enough runs in behind. He looks as though he’s lost a bit of pace. He’s lost confidence that’s for sure. He hasn’t made good decisions.”

For certain, Werner does look a shadow of the player he was in the Bundesliga and confidence plays a major part. It seems a bit of a stretch to suggest his pace has gone, though.

He’s scored six goals in his last seven international caps for Germany, so there’s just something about him playing in a Chelsea shirt that isn’t quite fitting.

Blues fans still support him because he works his socks off and is a likeable character. However, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is still trying to get the best from him, with his poor finishing and decision-making a real weakness to his game.

Blues future

Will Werner get a third season at the Bridge to try crack the Premier League?

He’s still under contract with Chelsea until 2025, but it’s been reported he’s one of seven first-team players that would be open to leaving the club this summer.

All eyes are on Tuchel to see how he finds the best combination in his forward line.
