The agent of David Raya, Jaume Munell, has claimed that Chelsea actually made an enquiry to sign the goalkeeper this summer.

However, he told AFTV that there was nothing concrete from the Blues, and he eventually made his way to Arsenal for a potential fee of £30m.

Raya was one of a number of goalkeepers who were linked with a move to Stamford Bridge when it emerged that both of their options from last season had left the club.

After Edouard Mendy’s move to Saudi Arabia, Kepa Arrizabalaga jumped at the chance to deputise for Thibaut Courtois at Real Madrid.

This left the Blues needing a goalkeeper or two, and now Munell has claimed that they made a move to make Raya their number one.

Chelsea asked about Raya

He said: “This summer, he had just one year left on his contract with Brentford and Arsenal was the club that showed the most concrete interest and have always been our priority.

“Bayern Munich didn’t understand our refusal because they thought that Raya would have been the backup keeper at Arsenal but as you can see it’s not like this. Also Manchester United and Chelsea made an inquiry but nothing concrete.”

While the Spaniard ended up across London at the Emirates, it was his countryman that made way to Stamford Bridge.

Robert Sanchez has been an ever-present for the Blues this season, impressing manager Mauricio Pochettino along the way.

The former Brighton man has had a strong start to life in West London, although it is fair to say his game is not universally loved around the stadium.

Despite some fan discontent, there are no reported plans to bring in a goalkeeper anytime soon.
