Chelsea’s Lesley Ugochukwu is playing for a Southampton team this season that is still waiting for its first win in the Premier League.

Chelsea decided to send Lesley Ugochukwu, 20, on a season-long loan to Southampton. The 20-year-old midfielder is starting to get some decent minutes at St Mary’s as he bids to develop his game, but he’s part of a squad that is having a tough time in the top division.

Southampton have picked up just one point from their opening six games in the Premier League following Monday night’s 3-1 defeat away to Bournemouth.

For Ugochukwu, he started for the Saints yesterday at Bournemouth. However, he was one of three players substituted off at half time after a poor first half.

Chelsea have several youngsters out on loan, including Ugochukwu at Southampton. The Blues loanee has a big job on his hands trying to help keep Russell Martin’s side in the Premier League this year, though.

Chelsea fans question Lesley Ugochukwu loan

A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media have questioned whether Southampton is the right destination for Ugochukwu’s loan spell after Monday night. Many are suggesting that the defensive midfielder would be better off elsewhere.

Here are some Blues fans on X reacting to Ugochukwu’s latest Southampton performance versus Bournemouth:

@Matiasmnfp wrote: “I’m starting to doubt if Southampton was a good loan. [Russell] Martin is asking him to be N’Golo Kante and he can’t cover that much space.”

@CFC_Nomad claimed: “Recall him (Ugochukwu) in January, we need depth anyway.”

@BigMak92 posted: “Southampton was a bad choice of club for Ugochukwu.”

@TobyEvenden said: “Bit worried Ugochukwu’s loan is like when Billy Gilmour went Norwich.”

@PhillipsWR84 shared: “Southampton is a bad loan for Ugochukwu. Real shame because he has the talent to start for a top six side.”

Lesley Ugochukwu stats vs Bournemouth

FotMob data has provided the individual statistics from Uguochukwu’s Southampton display against Bournemouth this week:

We’ve seen Ugochukwu deliver some eye-catching performances so far at the start of his Southampton career, particularly in the club’s Carabao Cup run. However, we fear for the Frenchman’s starting position in the league after Monday’s disasterclass.
