Marc Cucurella warns one thing has to stop at Chelsea immediately

Even though Marc Cucurella is one of the key figures in Chelsea’s backline, he’s stressed that they must improve defensively.

There have been a few cracks in the Chelsea defence during the opening couple of months of this season. They have conceded 12 times in their opening nine matches across all competitions, keeping just three clean sheets.

Blues head coach Enzo Maresca has had concerns about two positions, goalkeeper and centre-back, and he’s been proved right so far.

Marc Cucurella warns Chelsea to stop conceding easy goals

Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella, 27, has explained that the Blues are conceding too many “easy goals” right now.

“I think we are working hard. It’s true we need to learn and try not to concede these easy goals, and we need to keep improving. We have a lot of quality and a lot of talent, but we need to learn, as every game is a good opportunity to improve things,” Cucurella said via Chelsea’s official website.

Cucurella, who’s greatly admired by Ally McCoist, is such a consistent performer in Chelsea’s back four at left-back. At right-back, Reece James is well supported by understudy Malo Gusto as well. The main issue lies in the heart of defence.

Benoit Badiashile impressed against Benfica at centre-half during his first start of the season, so perhaps he can solve a glaring problem. We’ve seen throughout his Blues career he can be inconsistent, though.

As for the goalkeeper spot, Robert Sanchez will continue to have his critics because it feels like a costly error is always just around the corner.

Who should start at centre-back vs Liverpool?

On Saturday, Chelsea host Liverpool in the Premier League before an international break, but they are without several senior central defenders.

It will be intriguing to see what Maresca does with his backline against Liverpool, particularly with the centre-back partnership. He is without centre-halves Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo and Levi Colwill for various reasons this weekend.

It looks like it will be two from three out of Badiashile, Jorrel Hato and Josh Acheampong to form the centre-back partnership at home to Liverpool.

We would lean towards an Acheampong-Badiashile combination for the upcoming league match. However, the defensive record may get worse before it gets better.
