Mario Melchiot admits he was left totally confused by Mauricio Pochttino’s decision to start with only two attackers in Chelsea’s final game before the international break.
The Chelsea fanbase are currently sat during the international period dwelling on a 1-0 Premier League defeat at home to Nottingham Forest.
Mauricio Pochettino’s team selection in last Saturday’s loss certainly raised a few eyebrows with supporters. In particular, the Blues head coach continued with the trend of picking just two out-and-out attackers in his starting XI, Nicolas Jackson and Raheem Sterling.

ESPN pundit Melchiot is massively surprised by Pochettino’s negative team selection last weekend against Forest.
“Why did he start the game [against Forest] and only have two forwards on the field? Jackson and Sterling, they were the only two,” Melchiot told ESPN.
“You’re playing at the Bridge. That is the question I could not answer because that’s a big one for me.”

Chelsea certainly had some firepower on the bench against Forest. In fact, Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Cole Palmer were all used as substitutes during the second half.
However, Pochettino is still trying to find the right balance and formula with his side during the early weeks of the season.
In our view, the Blues need to revert to the 4-2-3-1 system after the international break.
It means one of the defenders will have to drop out of the line-up to allow another much-needed goalscoring option on the pitch.
