Martin Keown’s comments about Mikel Arteta should look absolutely ridiculous to Chelsea fans – opinion

Martin Keown claimed yesterday on Match of the Day 2 that he was a fan of Mikel Arteta’s antics on the touchline during the match against Manchester United.

While Chelsea were grinding out a 0-0 draw with fellow underachievers Liverpool, Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table.

Arteta has become well known for the emotion and passion he shows on the sideline, frantically moving up and down as his side play.

He took things too far yesterday, with him picking up a yellow card for his troubles.

Despite the caution, Keown has claimed he has no issue with what the Spaniard is doing, claiming it is his way of getting things across to his side.

He said: “I haven’t got a problem with the manager as well, being so emotional. I think he sees things so quickly he’s desperate to get that across to his players.”

This however is quite the contradiction from the former Arsenal man.

Keown contradictory on Arteta and Tuchel

When Thomas Tuchel was showing his similar level of passion in a win against Barnsley in the FA Cup, he accused the German of overwhelming his players with too much information.

He said: “Tuchel has come through the door, got five very good results, and showed a different side to their game last night with some character.

“But you’ve got to limit the messages that come across — he was up on his feet [during the game v Barnsley] and really angry.

“[As a player], there are times when I wanted my manager to sit down, keep quiet and let me play. I want information, but I don’t want too much information.”

The former Champions League winner is yet to return to management, despite links to some of the biggest job in the game.

Last week even saw him touted for the Tottenham job, a move which would seriously anger portions of the Stamford Bridge faithful.
