Mauricio Pochettino has identified the fitness of Chelsea’s players as a real weakness during the opening weeks of pre-season.

That is according to a report from The Athletic.

Mauricio Pochettino’s teams are renowned for being very energetic and strong runners, so it’s no surprise to hear he’s already whipping the Blues squad into shape.

The Athletic explains that Pochettino identified the fitness of the Chelsea squad as an area that really damaged them last season.

It is believed that the player’s levels impacted performances in games and the amount of injuries they picked up.

The report says that Chelsea are now closely monitoring the exercise carried out by the players in this summer’s pre-season, which includes keeping a close eye on the gym work.

We’re expecting to see a new-look Blues line-up full of running by the time the Premier League begins next month!

Many fans will agree that Chelsea were being outfought towards the final phase of last season, but we doubt Pochettino will settle for that during his time in the dugout.

It’s exciting times ahead of five friendly matches during this summer’s pre-season tour of the United States.

The Blues have now arrived in the US with a very young 29-man squad, so you’d expect there to be a lot of energy and a real buzz within the group.

Journalist Matt Law recently explained on the London Is Blue podcast that Chelsea’s staff think Pochettino hasn’t gone overboard on running during his first couple of weeks in charge.

We can only wish the players good luck for their time in the United States if that’s the case.
