It is understood that the Blues head coach hugely values the 23-year-old midfielder because of his ‘tenacity, personality and tactical versatility’.
Gallagher has certainly emerged as a favourite under Pochettino in the opening phase of his reign.
It certainly shocked plenty of supporters to see the academy graduate wear the armband this season during the absence of club captain Reece Jame and vice-captain Ben Chilwell.
Some may argue that the central midfielder shouldn’t be in Chelsea’s best XI, but it’s very important to acknowledge he’s ticking a lot of boxes for the current man in the manager’s dugout.
In our view, we’re seeing some positive things in Gallagher’s game. For example, he’s creating chances and you can never question his commitment.
Can he take the next step in his game to become a top-class midfielder, though?
A worrying report from The Athletic recently claimed that Chelsea’s hierarchy value Gallagher more for his sell-on potential than his actual ability on the pitch. However, we would suggest Pochettino sees things completely different.
The £50,000-a-week (Spotrac) player should be shutting out the external noise and focus on impressing while he’s in possession of a starting jersey.
