Levi Colwill will sit down for a meeting with Mauricio Pochettino soon to discuss his position at Chelsea.
That is according to The Evening Standard.
Levi Colwill, who’s just 20, is a highly-rated defender to come through Chelsea’s academy system at Cobham.
The centre-back is due to meet up with the Blues squad this summer for pre-season after a positive loan spell at Brighton last year.
But will he be part of a new-look Chelsea side next season under Mauricio Pochettino?
The Evening Standard claims that Chelsea have now offered Colwill a new long-term contract with them.
It is understood that the 20-year-old wants to hold talks with incoming boss Pochettino before deciding his future, though.
The report explains that Colwill wants to hear directly from the Chelsea head coach about his plans to use him because he doesn’t want to be a back-up option at Stamford Bridge next season.
Apparently, Pochettino is already a big admirer of the ball-playing defender, who’s currently impressing for England at the Under-21s European Championship.
There’s reportedly interest from the likes of Brighton, Manchester City and Liverpool in Colwill. However, Chelsea insist he won’t be sold at any price.
Premier League legend Rio Ferdinand recently told FIVE’s YouTube channel that he would love Manchester United to sign Colwill this summer. He can’t picture the talented centre-half exiting Chelsea, though.
In our view, Pochettino needs to ensure Colwill is given every chance to earn his spot in the line-up.
Of course, nobody is entitled to a guaranteed spot in the XI. But we’re confident Colwill can grow and develop into a top Chelsea defender is he gets his opportunity.
Let’s hope Pochettino can convince him into penning the contract offer that is on the table before focusing on the football on the pitch.
