Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has given his reason for signing Cole Palmer from Manchester City.

Cole Palmer left the Etihad for Stamford Bridge during the summer and has been an absolute revelation there so far.

He was on the scoresheet in Chelsea’s 4-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur on Monday and Mauricio Pochettino told Sky Sports before the game that he needed a player like him in his squad.

Palmer’s goal versus Spurs was his third in the Premier League this season, with all three of them coming from the penalty spot.

Chelsea needed Cole Palmer

Pochettino says Chelsea were missing a playmaker and that is why they signed Palmer.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Argentine said: “I think when we tried to sign him and when he arrived the last day of the transfer market, I think we was thinking that he can be a player, that playmaker that we needed on the team.”

As well as scoring in the London derby on Monday night, Palmer also managed to register an assist.

It was his fourth in all competitions for Chelsea since joining the club, so his playmaking skills have certainly been on show.

According to WhoScored, the attacker is currently making 1.6 key passes per game, which is the highest average in the Blues’ squad.

All in all, then, Pochettino can certainly be happy with what he is getting from Palmer right now. And at just 21 years of age, there is time for the former Tottenham manager to coach him into an even better player.

Jason Cundy recently compared him to his former City teammate Bernardo Silva. If he can get anywhere near that level, then the Premier League champions may rue letting him go.

Palmer has a chance to show City what they are missing when Pep Guardiola’s men travel to Stamford Bridge on Sunday. With the form that the England U21 international is in at the moment, he is nailed on to start against his old club.
