Pundit Micah Richards has been full of praise for one manager who was actually sacked by Chelsea in recent times.

He told ‘The Rest is Football’ that he believes Graham Potter is a top coach who just took the role at Stamford Bridge at the wrong time.

The discourse surrounding the job at Chelsea has only continued after Mauricio Pochettino oversaw another heavy defeat yesterday.

His Chelsea side were battered 4-2 at home by Wolves, who completed the Premier League double over the Blues.

Calls for the manager to be sacked became a bit louder in the fanbase, with some making their feelings known at the stadium.

The Argentine was the permanent replacement for Potter, who didn’t even make it through his first season at the club.

Richards on Potter

However, Richards has now claimed that Potter is absolutely still a top manager who was just in an unfortunate scenario.

He said: “Potter, he was doing an outstanding job at Brighton wasn’t he? He gets the Chelsea job, it was probably too big of a time for him at that time, but he’s not going to say no to it.

“Now, people don’t think he’s good enough to manage a top club. He is! He just went to a club at the wrong time.

“I just think it’s all about timing and the media – we put them on a pedestal.”

Reports have already begun to spread that some working at the club are considering their options when it comes to who is in charge.

Xabi Alonso is reportedly one figure they are considering bringing in as a replacement off the back of his sensational start to life at Bayer Leverkusen.

However, that move will surely be difficult to pull off given the fact that the Liverpool job will be up for grabs at the end of the season.
