Moises Caicedo has now shared which former Chelsea players inspired him when he was growing up.

He told the official club website that both N’golo Kante and Claude Makelele are players he looked up to as he was climbing the ranks in first team football.

Caicedo put himself in the good books of a number of Chelsea fans before he even played a game for the club.

He decided to snub the chance to complete a medical with Liverpool, instead preferring to hold out for the Blues to raise the funds for a British-record transfer.

The Ecuador international has begun to form a strong partnership in the middle of the park with Enzo Fernandez, with his presence perhaps best appreciated when he wasn’t fit enough to start this weekend against Newcastle.

The Blues were battered 4-1 away from home, with his replacement Lesley Ugochukwu seeming to struggle in the big game.

Caicedo on Kante and Makelele

Caicedo has now claimed that his game has been inspired in the past by a number of Chelsea legends in his position.

He said: “I used to watch videos of [Claude] Makelele from when he was here, because when I started to play in the midfield, I started to watch videos of Chelsea.

“I saw some videos of Makelele, and some of Kante as well. It was a motivation for me to play football because they were legends here.”

Mauricio Pochettino will now be praying that the midfielder is fit enough to start against his former side at the weekend, with Brighton coming to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues will be desperate to get back to winning ways after the humbling defeat against Newcastle, and instead show some of the stuff that saw them go toe-to-toe with Manchester City before the international break.
