‘Nasty’: Paul Canoville says he’s heard something ‘pathetic’ being said about Chelsea after CWC win

Paul Canoville took a swipe at Craig Burley after the ESPN pundit brushed away Chelsea’s Club World Cup victory over the weekend.

Thomas Tuchel’s team narrowly defeated Palmeiras last Saturday, thanks to a very late penalty from Kai Havertz.

Romelu Lukaku had put the Champions League holders ahead in the second half, but the Brazilian’s levelled shortly after via their own spot-kick.

Havertz shouldered the responsibility in the 117th minute and calmy dispatched past the Palmeiras goalkeeper.

Burley breaks into a rant

Chelsea have now won every competition they’ve ever entered, hence the wild celebrations long after the final whistle.

However, some still view the tournament as something of a farce.

One of the main advocates against the Club World Cup predictably was Burley, who commented on his former club’s recent triumph in typical appreciative fashion.

“I don’t even watch this competition; I think it’s a nonsense,” insisted the ex-Scotland international.

“As they’re off celebrating like they’ve won the World Cup, Manchester City are racking up a 16-point lead on Chelsea where it really matters, the Premier League.

“The Club World Cup is a nonsense, it’s a showcase event, it’s a plastic trophy.”

For a player whose greatest and arguably only accomplishment was winning the Scottish Premier Division in 1998, it’s a bit rich calling out Chelsea’s achievements.

Canovile comes to the resecue

Canoville couldn’t bear to listen to Burley’s outrage without commenting himself.

The Stamford Bridge icon went onto Twitter to take down the furious Scotsman.

“Why you got such a chip on your shoulder?” typed Canoville.

“That was a pathetic attack on the players,” and “nasty attention seeking punditry,” were the defiant words that followed.

As rightly pointed out, Drogba was one of many to applaud Chelsea’s victory in Abu Dhabi.

“It means a lot. After 2012 we couldn’t win it. I wasn’t there and we lost it… That’s why I came to support the team. I hope it worked! It’s good to see them lift the trophy we are missing,” said the legendary Ivorian striker.

He also praised Cesar Azpilicueta, after the captain claimed his ninth title with the Blues.

We suggest you take a step back for a bit, Burley.
