Nevin names two Chelsea youngsters he thinks Lampard could start soon
Pat Nevin believes Chelsea’s recent struggles could pave the way for Callum Hudson-Odoi and 19-year-old Billy Gilmour to be in the starting lineup discussion.
The past few weeks have been really tough for everyone at Chelsea and the fans.
With one win from the last six games, Chelsea now sit ninth after briefly topping the league table earlier this month.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin, however, spotted one positive things involving two Chelsea talents; Hudson-Odoi and Gilmour.
“Well imagine you are Callum Hudson-Odoi or Billy Gilmour,” he told Chelsea’s official website.
“Both youngsters would have been getting a bit frustrated until recently.
“The team was flying, there were a whole bunch of top internationals between each of them and a first-team start.
“Suddenly both players look like they could be on the cusp of getting a decent run in the team.”
Nevin highlighted Hudson-Odoi’s positive displays in the past three games despite the disappointing results.
He also praised Gilmour’s impactful second-half cameo against Manchester City.
“For Billy, the impressive list of Kovacic, Kante, Mount and Jorginho seemed well ahead of him,” he added.
“But after the run we have had and his assured performance once he got into the pace of the game against City, he must have moved right up the pecking order.”
The pair will likely have the opportunity to impress in Sunday’s FA Cup third-round tie against Morecambe.
According to Goal, Frank Lampard is set to name a young team for the cup tie, including several academy members who have joined the first team training since last week.
