Ally McCoist thinks Potter keeps saying something Chelsea fans really don’t want to hear since taking charge

Ally McCoist can’t imagine Chelsea supporters will be best pleased with Graham Potter’s withdrawn attitude to tasting defeat.

Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist argued that Potter’s words might speak just as loudly as his actions where the Stamford Bridge faithful are concerned.

Chelsea’s manager is not everybody’s cup of tea right now in South West London.

Back-to-back Premier League losses have slumped the Blues to seventh place, 13 points behind Arsenal.

Chelsea crushed by Arsenal

The gap in quality was evident on the weekend, as Mikel Arteta’s team taught their rivals a lesson in being a team.

Arteta himself also overshadowed Potter in terms of animation and charisma on the touchline.

Although some of his actions were overzealous and seemingly an annoyance to Cesar Azpilicueta, at least it proved the Spaniard’s passion for the occasion.

In the opposite dugout, Potter pretty much stood silently whilst his players were pretty hushed on the pitch.

Even in his post-match interview, the Chelsea manager didn’t appear to be angered by the result.

He said the side ‘huffed and puffed’ and that ‘you could see the difference between the two teams in terms of confidence’ and points.

Arsenal also deserved to pick up the three points, according to Potter.

Whilst this statement is entirely true, it’s not exactly the reaction followers of the Blues demand from their leader.

Potter must speak up

“He’s clearly, clearly not the same character as a (Antonio) Conte or a (Jurgen) Klopp. He is kind of more (Pep) Guardiola in the way he behaves, although Guardiola is a bit more animated,” remarked McCoist on Potter’s mild manner.

“I think you’ve got to give him time. Investment is Chelsea’s way in terms of players moving forward. They will trust him to do that.

“They obviously got rid of Tuchel and brought him in, so the one club more than any that has history of not hanging about and replacing managers is Chelsea.”

“There’s only so many times you can say ‘yeah we were beaten by better the side,’ even though you will inevitably when you are beaten.

“But that’s not what the supporters want to hear. They want to hear a reason for it, why your own team didn’t perform.”

There are numerous reasons why Chelsea didn’t perform against Arsenal.

Injuries to several key personnel forced Potter to tinker with his XI again, losing any consistency or momentum they gained from the win over Dinamo Zagreb.

Thiago Silva just didn’t look at his best in a back-three, whilst Mason Mount and Kai Havertz’s position were hard to pin down.

Arsenal were simply better organised across the park, martialled by the ever-vocal Arteta.
