Owen Hargreaves is seriously impressed by the quality of RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol, who’s a player Chelsea reportedly want to sign.

Leipzig star Gvardiol, 21, is rated as one of the most talented youngsters in the sport.

The centre-back is already a talisman for Croatia at international level. He’s having a strong season for his club, too.

Unfortunately, he was part of a Leipzig side that were completely dismantled away to Manchester City this week. Man City thumped the Bundesliga outfit 7-0 on Tuesday night to qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals in emphatic fashion.

BT Sport pundit Hargreaves has no doubts over Gvardiol’s individual quality despite Leipzig’s humbling at the Etihad Stadium.

In fact, he believes the left-footed defender will grow into the world’s best centre-half in the future.

Speaking on BT Sport commentary during Man City vs Leipzig yesterday, Hargreaves said: “I think the boys said it, three centre backs in the studio before, all top players. He [Gvardiol], I think, is an absolute top one. I think he’ll be the best centre-back in the world one day. He’s learned a lot today, and probably wouldn’t mind playing in a team like this rather than against them.”

The Times claimed earlier this month that Chelsea have renewed interest in trying to sign Gvardiol.

Graham Potter’s side are ready to chase the Leipzig star’s signature when the summer transfer window opens.

We’re not overly concerned that he was part of a defence which was mauled by attacking machine Erling Haaland last night, who scored five goals in under an hour of Champions League football.

There is enough in Gvardiol’s form and potential to suggest he will be the benchmark for centre-backs in the future. He will learn a lot from the Haaland encounter, though.

However, do Chelsea need to break the bank for another centre-back when they already posses a number of talented defenders?
