Pat Nevin thinks 23-year-old Chelsea player showed glimpses he was back to his best on Saturday

Pat Nevin thinks that Kai Havertz showed glimpses of his best during Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with West Ham on Saturday.

The Blues recorded their third consecutive draw in the Premier League over the weekend as the team’s underwhelming form continued.

It’s no secret that Graham Potter’s side have really struggled to score goals this campaign, but there were at least encouraging signs from Joao Felix against West Ham. The on-loan Atletico Madrid attacker scored his first Chelsea goal, which earned him big praise from his manager.

Kai Havertz impact

For Havertz, he started a ninth consecutive game in Chelsea colours.

The left-footed German has started every single match since the resumption after the World Cup and has been tasked with playing as the recognised striker.

His latest appearance against West Ham was another game where he failed to hit the back of the net. The 23-year-old forward did have a fantastic goal chalked off for offside, though, rounding the keeper and tucking into an empty goal.

There were some positive signs of a connection building with Felix in the No.10 position, which is no surprise because both are very intelligent footballers.

However, there continues to be plenty of frustration within the fanbase about Havertz’s overall impact on a game.

Pat Nevin optimistic

Nevin has spoken out very positively about Havertz following his latest outing.

He noticed a lot of great things from the striker’s display in a London derby and suggested he was creeping back towards his best.

“Kai had his own difficulties at the World Cup along with his national team as a whole, but there were definite moments of his imperious best to be seen at the weekend,” Nevin told the club’s official website.

“Defences at the top level are hard to glide past but he was finding some gaps and making intelligent runs throughout. His finish, that was marginally offside in the build-up, was as cool as his famous, never-to-be-forgotten strike in Porto that won us the Champions League.

“Kai is not the classic old-school centre-forward that so many English pundits think is the only answer, but when you haven’t got one of them available then you must think outside the box, or think differently inside the box if we are going to be pedantic about it.”
