Paul Canoville has sent a supportive message to young Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah whom he believes will be a “huge player” for the club.
The 22-year-old arguably had the busiest afternoon at Wembley in the FA Cup final among Chelsea defenders.
The versatile centre-back had to deal with Luis Diaz, Liverpool’s main threat in the game, for over 90 minutes.
Micah Richards even highlighted how Chalobah often had to defend in one-on-one situations against the eventual man of the match.
In total, the Chelsea academy graduate registered five tackles and five clearances, as well as winning six out of seven ground duels, on the pitch.
Hard work does not always yield results, and it was, unfortunately, the case for Chalobah and the other Chelsea players.
“Sorry to the fans, you deserved this trophy,” the Chelsea defender posted on social media after the devastating cup final loss.
“The team gave everything, still hurts, but we stick together.”
Questions over Chalobah’s future at Chelsea
Despite making the starting line-up in the final, there have been questions about whether he will keep his spot in the squad next season.
His inclusion and quick integration into Thomas Tuchel’s squad came as a pleasant surprise to many at the start of the season.
However, he has played a less prominent role in the second half of the season, with injuries also playing a part.
Well, Blues icon Canoville does not seem to have any doubt about Chalobah’s future at the club.
“[The] kid is going to be an absolutely huge player for Chelsea,” Canoville wrote in response to Chalobah’s tweet.
“We go again next season.”
The Blues will likely be active in the defender transfer market this summer with several players, including Antonio Rudiger, expected to leave the club.
This could go either way for Chalobah. He may earn more opportunities to cement his spot as a regular or face fierce competition from potential signings next season.
