It looks as if Chelsea are about to part ways with a player who was seen as one of their most important figures last season.

Conor Gallagher is reportedly on his way to Atletico Madrid after finally deciding he is open to the move, after it looked as if he was not willing to accept the contract offered to him by the club.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, the England international donned the captain’s armband for more than half of the season, and started near enough every single game throughout the campaign.

Chelsea supporters are fuming with the decision surrounding Gallagher, with many seeing it as unfair treatment of an academy graduate.

One figure who also seems a little upset with the decision is Paul Merson. He took to Twitter to state that he didn’t want to see the Englishman move on.

Merson unhappy at Gallagher being sold by Chelsea

He said: “What are we thinking Chelsea fans? Didn’t want to see Gallagher leave, always giving his all for the club and a consistent performer.”

It looked as if even if Gallagher did commit his short-term future to the Blues that he would not be in the picture for a starting spot. Reports stated there were doubts over his ability to feature in Enzo Maresca’s system.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall adding competition in midfield

When looking at the midfielders currently with the club, it does seem as if there is already going to be plenty of competition for places even without Gallagher.

Adding to the established duo of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo will be Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall after his summer addition, with him having plenty of experience in a Maresca setup.

Romeo Lavia will also be praying for an injury-free campaign too after he was only able to manage 45 minutes in the whole of the last season.
