Former Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge thinks Brentford star Ivan Toney would suit his old side.

Chelsea could make a move for Ivan Toney in January as they look to bring in a new centre-forward, but he will not come cheap.

According to Sky Sports, Brentford value the 27-year-old at £100m. Nevertheless, Daniel Sturridge, speaking on Sky Sports yesterday, suggested that the Blues should go out and buy him.

He was in excellent form for the Bees last season, scoring 20 goals in 33 Premier League appearances.

Ivan Toney would suit Chelsea

Sturridge thinks Toney and Chelsea could be a good match but feels other clubs in England could do with him as well.

Discussing the England international on Sky Sports, he said: “He would be the prime example of what the likes of Chelsea or Tottenham could sign now, maybe Manchester United, all of them. He’s a player who could come in, knows the league, he understands the level here.

“He brings a different level of aggression, height, hold-up play, link-up play and he’s a finisher. I think he would suit Chelsea maybe the most; I think he could play for Spurs. I don’t know who needs him the most because I think they all need him.”

Ivan Toney similar to Didier Drogba and Diego Costa

Toney and Chelsea really could be a good match when you look at successful strikers of the past at Stamford Bridge.

In terms of recent history, you instantly think of Drogba and Costa, physical centre-forwards who loved a battle with a defender.

Toney is quite similar in that sense, but most importantly, though, he scores goals at this level just like they did.

Ultimately, if Chelsea are going to sign a new centre-forward next year, then the Brentford man could be a great option for them.

Nicolas Jackson scored a hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur last night and if he can keep finding the back of the net from now until January, then perhaps Chelsea will not need to go out and buy a striker. However, his record before that game was a bit of a concern, so the Blues should still be looking at other No.9s right now.

Jackson could prove that he is the real deal, though, with a goalscoring display versus Manchester City on Sunday. Do that, and maybe Chelsea will delay their No.9 pursuit.
