It has been widely reported that the Bundesliga side are keen on a deal that will at least begin as a loan for Maatsen.

However, Chelsea are believed to be open to the permanent sale of the 21-year-old, with a fee of £30m being accepted back in the summer.

He was fresh off a really strong pre-season tour of the United States, where he had been one of Mauricio Pochettino’s most impressive players.

However, fast forward to the start of 2024 and he has just one start under his belt in the Premier League so far, with that being completely out of his natural position.

Dortmund confident of Maatsen

Instead, the manager has preferred to start natural centre-back Levi Colwill at left-back in the face of the injury crisis they are facing.

Now though, Romano has claimed that Dortmund are confident of closing a deal for the 21-year-old this week.

He said: “Borussia Dortmund are increasingly confident to seal both Jadon Sancho and Ian Maatsen deals this week! Talks are progressing well. Sancho, ready to travel as soon as he receives the green light from United. Maatsen loan deal details still being clarified with Chelsea.”

It has been previously reported that the Blues may consider signing a new left-back to replace the Dutchman if he leaves.

The club should look to Argentina and the potential of Valentin Barco being on the move this summer, although at this stage a move for him tor Brighton looks more likely right now.
