Rafa Benitez knows how difficult the job of Chelsea manager is, although is tipping Xabi Alonso to succeed at Stamford Bridge.

Many Blues fans struggled to get behind Benitez when he was in charge of the club after their serious battles against his Liverpool side in the 2000s.

Alonso was a player in the Liverpool team at this time, but there is more backing already of him now the club have managed to convince him to take over.

Rafa Benitez tips Xabi Alonso for success at Chelsea

With no European football to contend with, there is quiet optimism that the Blues can enjoy a strong season in 2026/27, and Benitez is tipping the boss to succeed.

He told Sky Sports that his knowledge of the Premier League is a major factor as to why he will do well at Chelsea.

He said: “I think Xabi is really clever. He did really well with Leverkusen – and that was a surprise, because he was coming from Real Sociedad B.

“To do what he did at Leverkusen was fantastic. Then going to Real Madrid – we know from experience that this is quite complicated – but at the same time he knows the league, he knows the players.

“He knows everything around the Premier League. He’s clever – I think he is a good coach. Chelsea is not easy, but I think he can do well.”

Early signs from Alonso’s pre-season campaign

Chelsea players who are not at the World Cup have now completed their first couple of training sessions under Alonso in pre-season.

Youngsters such as Reggie Walsh have been handed a chance to impress the manager, however some key names have been left out so far.

These include Alejandro Garnacho, with both parties searching for the best solution to confirm his exit this summer.

Roma are currently the frontrunners for his signature, with the Argentine keen on a move to the Serie A side.
