Alan Shearer was not impressed with Levi Colwill’s defending for Manchester United’s winning goal against Chelsea last night.
Levi Colwill was beaten easily by Scott McTominay, who headed the ball home to put Manchester United 2-1 up, and Alan Shearer was critical of the Chelsea youngster on Prime Video after he went to ground following his duel with his opponent.
VAR looked at it, but nothing was given and the home side went on to collect all three points.
Chelsea were really disappointing on the night, especially in the first half, though goalkeeper Robert Sanchez did not put in the worst performance.
He made a great double save against McTominay, which Ally McCoist described as “incredible”.
Alan Shearer critical of Levi Colwill’s defending
Shearer thinks Colwill should have done much better for McTominay’s second goal.
Speaking on Prime Video, the Newcastle United legend said: “Really weak defending here from Colwill. Both of them were at it. Both of them have their arms on each other. It went to VAR but it was never a foul, it was never going to be enough to be turned over.
“Defenders should be dealing with it. But credit to McTominay, he wants it more than the defender and it wins the game for them.”

Should Levi Colwill have done better for Manchester United’s winning goal?
Yes. It really was weak defending, with the 20-year-old going down way too easily.
The England international is naturally a centre-back and quite a big one for his age. It was a surprise to see McTominay beat him in the manner that he did.
Supporters should not be too harsh on Colwill, though, even with that moment proving to be costly.
With the way Chelsea were playing, they still probably would have gone on to lose that match had McTominay not scored, while Colwill has performed well for the team overall this season.
The defender and the rest of his team-mates now have to bounce back with a win when they travel to Goodison Park on Sunday to take on Everton.
But honestly, the damage already looks to be done in this current campaign. It is going to take a miracle for Mauricio Pochettino‘s side to finish in the top four.
