Scoring goals has not been the only problem for Chelsea this season.

A lot has been said about Chelsea‘s issues in attack, but the Blues have been extremely poor in defence recently.

And Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has now urged Mauricio Pochettino to fix that when speaking on ESPN FC.

The two goals Chelsea let in in their 2-0 loss to Everton yesterday means that they have now conceded 14 times in their last five Premier League outings.

Thiago Silva was left out of the starting XI for the defeat at Goodison Park and Alan Pardew suggested that the Blues are a worse side without him.

Steve Nicol on Chelsea’s defending

Nicol has warned Pochettino that he needs to sort out Chelsea’s defensive problems immediately.

Discussing the Blues after their latest loss on ESPN FC, he said: “They have to figure out what’s happening defensively because you can’t keep shipping goals, particularly when you’re struggling to score yourself. That’s a recipe for disaster and right now that’s what’s happening.”

How can Mauricio Pochettino improve Chelsea defensively?

Chelsea are definitely conceding too many goals right now. There is just no balance or consistency with this team.

They can defend but cannot attack, then they can attack but not defend and now it is both. So what exactly does Pochettino do?

Well at the moment, Chelsea are simply losing too many games and that is because of the amount of goals they are conceding. Ultimately, Pochettino has got to stop the bleeding then worry about how he can get his side to start hurting the opposition.

The best way to do that is by playing a back three, a tactic that has worked so well for Chelsea and under different managers in the past.

It perhaps will not fix everything and may hurt the Blues going forward a bit, but they need to become a more solid outfit again. Right now, Pochettino’s side are defending like proper relegation candidates.
