Chelsea fans got to see Reece James playing in a brand new position on Thursday.

Chelsea are up and running during their pre-season tour in the United States after a 2-2 draw against Wrexham. Christopher Nkunku opened the scoring in the first-half. Meanwhile, Lesley Ugochukwu scored late in the second period to kickstart the US tour with a draw.

Enzo Maresca was on the sidelines for his first match as the new Blues head coach. Speaking via Football.London in his post-match press conference, Maresca praised goalkeeper Robert Sanchez for his display on Thursday.

Reece James is another individual who played the opening 45 minutes versus Wrexham before wholesale changes at half-time. Interestingly, it was in a new position as an inverted right-back.

Reece James comments on his new position

James, 24, operated in his new role during the first-half period. The basic principle is that he drops into a central midfield position whenever his side are in possession, this occasion working next to Romeo Lavia.

The English star has just given an honest assessment on how he’s adapting to the manager’s demands.

When asked how he’s finding the new position under Maresca, James told Chelsea’s YouTube channel: “The early days have been very enjoyable. It’s a lot different to what I’m used to, but with how I play it suits me quite well.

“I’ve still got a lot to learn for what he wants in the role. But I’m excited, and I can’t wait.”

Much more to come from Reece James

Even in one half of football from James, it seems pretty evident to us that he’ll have no issue this season operating in the centre of the park. His biggest challenge will be staying fit and available all year.

James will become more comfortable the longer he plays in midfield pockets, but he’s extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet. On top of that, he’s a powerful runner and looked effective in a double pivot alongside Lavia.

Leicester City’s Ricardo Pereira mastered the position last season under Maresca. We expect James to do exactly the same moving forward, too.
