Chelsea captain Reece James has spoken out about his close bond with England manager Thomas Tuchel, as well as recalling their time together at Stamford Bridge.

The chemistry between Reece James and Thomas Tuchel has taken center stage once again, this time on the international stage at the 2026 World Cup. The duo previously enjoyed a highly successful period together at Stamford Bridge, where Tuchel transformed James into a devastating right-back, which resulted in the 2021 Champions League triumph.

Now leading the Three Lions in the United States, Tuchel has made the Chelsea captain a vital component of his defensive system. Refusing to let reputation dictate selection, the German manager has heavily relied on James’ versatility, leadership, and tournament experience.

For James, reuniting with his former club boss has provided the perfect platform, especially given his struggles at times this season.

Reece James loves playing under Thomas Tuchel

Speaking whilst in the United States (as per the Daily Mirror), Reece James has been bigging up England boss Thomas Tuchel, recalling their time together at Chelsea.

“I had an amazing time with the manager together at Chelsea and I am happy he is the boss. I’m glad to work with him. For sure, that’s why we’re here. We don’t come to take part, and as we speak, we’re on the mountain, still climbing. There’s still room to go, for sure.”

However, let’s not speak too soon, as we don’t know whether he’ll start England’s first game.

Reece James is off to a great start

Reece James enjoyed a highly productive pair of World Cup warm-up appearances as England wrapped up their pre-tournament preparations in the United States.

In the opening match against New Zealand in Tampa, the Chelsea captain was introduced as a half-time substitute by Thomas Tuchel, playing 45 minutes at right-back to help preserve a 1-0 clean sheet.

James was then handed a starting role for the final friendly against Costa Rica in Orlando. Despite a disruptive one-hour weather delay caused by heavy thunderstorms, he safely completed 63 vital minutes to build match fitness ahead of England’s tournament opener.
