Reports have claimed that Chelsea are currently not set to discuss extending Mason Mount’s contract until the end of the season.

According to The Athletic, the club are far more concerned with how they finish the campaign both domestically and in Europe.

The situation around the England international is a fascinating one when taking into account his last few years at Stamford Bridge.

Mount had frequently been the first name on the teamsheet under numerous managers, most recently Champions League winning boss Thomas Tuchel.

Last season he finished the campaign as the top scorer and assister, in the face of an inconsistent campaign from Romelu Lukaku up top.

However, fast forward to this season and he has been benched for the most important game of the season against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Mount contract discussions on hold

This unthinkable scenario was backed up by his poor performances this season, with goals and assists completely disappearing from his game.

Graham Potter has been able to change things up since January, with a number of mid-season signings looking to stake their claims as starters.

Joao Felix has been predominantly featuring in the role behind the striker, and has been extremely impactful up until last weekend’s game.

Mount was handed a start again against Southampton, one of his favourite opponents to face.

However, the game only piled more misery on the Blues as they were defeated at home by the side who were bottom of the league.

This has just added to the pressures on the side to deliver for the remainder of the campaign, with The Athletic claiming that they have now put contract talks with Mount on hold until the end of the season.

It feels as if the season will be based on if they can turn things around in the Champions League when Borussia Dortmund visit in a few weeks’ time.
