Report: Chelsea would find it much easier to sell 30-year-old instead of their £72m player

Reports have claimed that it would be easier for Chelsea to sell Edouard Mendy than Kepa Arrizabalaga next summer.

According to The Telegraph, the Blues are using this season to analyse whether or not they look to sign a new goalkeeper next summer.

Since Graham Potter joined the club, Mendy has been forced to play backup to Kepa, despite being fully fit for a number of weeks now.

Instead, he has been forced to watch from the side as the £72 million Spaniard has proven that he has the abilities to be the number one at Stamford Bridge.

The situation looked as far away from anything this time last year, when the Senegal international had recently picked up his award for being UEFA’s goalkeeper of the season.

Easier to sell Mendy than Kepa

That has seemingly counted for nothing in Potter’s books though, and he stuck with Kepa until an injury forced him off at half-time against Brighton.

This will see Mendy given an opportunity from the start against Dinamo Zagreb tonight.

However, his time at Chelsea may come to an end after this season. The Telegraph have claimed the Blues would have far less issues in finding a new home for the 30-year-old than the Spain international.

It had been believed originally that Kepa had been favoured by the manager was to do with his distribution. However, it has since shown that he can rival Mendy in terms of his ability to stop shots too.

Despite tonight’s game offering little importance, given the fact that the Blues have already secured their place in the knockout stage of the Champions League as group winners, it will be important to Mendy as he looks to prove why he was number one at Stamford Bridge for so long in favour of Kepa.
