It has been reported that securing new contracts for Chelsea pair Mason Mount and Reece James is expected to be difficult for Todd Boehly to complete.

According to The Athletic, the signing of Raheem Sterling is expected to influence negotiations for the England duo.

It had been revealed that Sterling will become the club’s highest earner when he arrives in West London

Meanwhile, Mount and James are awaiting talks over deals to confirm their long-term future at the club, having both risen through the academy system.

The lack of talks so far has kept some of Europe’s elite sides on watch that a potential sensational swoop could be on the cards, however there is so far no indication from the players that they would consider a move away.

Boehly faces Mount and James test

However, The Athletic have suggested the scenarios will pose Boehly’s first ‘big test’ as Chelsea owner, as he looks to maintain harmony amongst his side despite new signings.

With Sterling confirmed, the American will look to secure further transfers as the Blues aim to close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the table.

Kalidou Koulibaly is the name most recently linked with being close to a move to Stamford Bridge, after the player agreed personal terms on a deal to end his spell at Napoli.

While big signigns are obviously essential, one of the best bits of business Boehly can do for Chelsea fans is rewarding Mount and James with new deals at the club, leading to them committing their long-term future to the club.

Despite only being part of the squad for a few seasons, the pair have been essential members of Thomas Tuchel’s starting side, so avoiding any drama over their futures should be a high priority.
