Graham Potter has reportedly been set three targets to try and achieve this season by Chelsea following his appointment as head coach at Stamford Bridge.

The 47-year-old completed his move earlier in the week from Brighton manager to become the next Blues boss, succeeding very popular figure Thomas Tuchel.

According to The Independent, Chelsea’s board want Potter’s side to finish in the top four this campaign and also enjoy a run in the Champions League competition.

It is understood the first two targets aren’t viewed as “deal-breakers” when it comes to his job, though. There’s a desire from the London club to give their new coach plenty of time to make his mark, something evident from his five-year deal.

The report does state a third target which is regarded as the “most important” of the lot for the club’s owners. Chelsea want to see signs of improvement to the current side when it comes to implementing Potter’s fluid style of football.

Chelsea targets for Potter

Chelsea fans will be reluctant to believe Potter will be afforded time due to the ruthless way former managers have lost their jobs in the last couple of decades.

For example, fan favourites such as Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti have been axed harshly in some people’s eyes over the years.

However, it’s vital to point out that this is a new ownership under Todd Boehly and Co.

It makes little sense not to give Potter time to implement his methods over a long period, so supporters will hope this is now a change in the club’s ethos.

For certain, the targets laid out to Potter are achievable.

There is a really talented squad of players that have plenty of time in the season to get into the top four, as well as bounce back in the Champions League after losing their opening group match to Dinamo Zagreb.

His biggest challenge may be getting these big stars to buy into his ideas, but his eye-catching CV when it comes to building his own side is one of the reasons Chelsea have put their trust in him.

Frank Lebouef thinks Potter is taking charge at the Bridge at the right time.
