Reports suggest that Graham Potter’s inexperience at the top level of European football actually worked in his favour to become the new Chelsea manager.

According to Football London, the Blues owners were surprised that managers who had failed at the very top of the game were afforded more chances to take over teams looking to achieve at this level.

Potter put pen to paper on a five-year deal yesterday to become the new Chelsea manager, with him seemingly the big priority for Todd Boehly to hire for the role.

This is despite managers such as Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane being out of work, with the pair boasting far more European experience than the option they eventually chose.

Inexperience helped Potter

Pochettino was the one who did come under genuine consideration, however Chelsea’s owners were reportedly concerned at his ability to deliver on the biggest stage following Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League final defeat in 2019.

This, according to Football London, is why they ended up settling on Potter, with them claiming the owners were looking to bring in fresh eyes to the approach the club are trying to take.

Chelsea fans should be really excited that the club have landed on Potter, with him showing in the last few years in the Premier League that he is one of the most promising coaches in world football.

This season in particular the 47-year-old has impressed, with the Seagulls currently sitting in the top four of the Premier League and securing impressive wins in particular against Manchester United, Leicester City and West Ham United.

This has seen him nominated for the Premier League’s first manager of the month award, with the defensive security he had installed at the Amex undoubtedly a factor in the Chelsea owner’s decision to give him the job at Stamford Bridge.
