‘Since last May’: Fabrizio Romano says two Chelsea players have been waiting nearly a year to be offered a new contract

Fabrizio Romano revealed that N’Golo Kante and Jorginho have been waiting close to 12 months for a new contract offer from Chelsea.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, the transfer guru shared the length of time the two midfielders have been without a fresh proposal on the table.

Where are we with Kante and Jorginho?

Both players will be out of contract next June, with the moment to typically start discussing such matters rapidly approaching.

However, because of Chelsea’s current ownership problems, they cannot commence talks until Roman Abramovich’s replacement is confirmed and settled.

Only then can the likes of Kante and Jorginho begin to mull over their options for the coming season.

But nobody is quite certain when Abramovich’s successor will be installed, meaning the wait for new contracts could go into the summer.

By then, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta could’ve all walked away as free agents.

Kante and Jorginho might be fearing for the same fate, something that is seemingly also on the minds of Thomas Tuchel.

“With important players, it’s a wish as a coach that we solve this in the summer anyway,” admitted Tuchel recently whilst speaking on the topic of squad members nearing the end of their tenure.

“Then we have the same talks about Toni and Andreas, we just swap the names, we talk about it through winter, then comes January, then the agents talk with these clubs and the brother to the other…it would be nice if we can avoid it.”

Evading the situation is pretty impossible right now, especially with the expiring contract pile increasing gradually.

Is N’Golo about to crack?

“For Kante and Jorginho, I think Tuchel was very clear when he was right to say that they are facing the risk of having a new situation like the one they had with Toni Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, because both players are out of contract in 2023,” said Romano, building upon Tuchel’s previous point.

“Kante has been waiting since last May to have a proposal from Chelsea.

“Jorginho’s been waiting since last summer to have a proposal.”

That’s quite a stretch to be left in the dark over your future.

Whilst Chelsea will undoubtedly want to keep hold of Kante and Jorginho, not partly because of what they’ve achieved under Tuchel, there must be some inkling to let them loose.

They are both in their 30s, with neither quite hitting the heights expected of them this season.

Especially Kante, whose powers appear to be slowly fading.

The journey has been wonderful, but perhaps a fresh wave of faces is required to move the Blues forward once again.
