The Chelsea recruiters have received a fair amount of stick in recent years for the way they’ve assembled the squad, rightly so at times.
However, most people will now agree that the Chelsea squad looks in a much healthier position than it has recently.
Darren Bent has praised Enzo Maresca’s management of the Chelsea group this season, explaining that the head coach is rotating his team exceptionally well to keep a lot of players involved.
But if the Blues want to kick on to start winning silverware again, is this current crop of players good enough?

Steph Warnock claims Chelsea need another goalkeeper and centre-back
Sky Sports pundit Stephen Warnock thinks Chelsea are close to being back in the picture for the Premier League title race. However, he insists that they still need to sign a goalkeeper and one centre-half of the highest level to help them close the gap.
When asked what Chelsea need to become Premier League title contenders, Warnock told Sky Sports News: “One or two seasons. I think they need a better goalkeeper. I think centre-back they need a more dominant leader… I don’t think they’re far off. I think they’re a couple of years away. I think you need that central defender and goalkeeper at a world-class level.”
Chelsea are actively monitoring the centre-back market, with Benfica defender Tomas Araujo named as a potential suitor.
So far this season, Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana have emerged as the Blues’ preferred starting combination at centre-back in the Premier League. While some may think the young duo have the potential to be the long-term answer in defence, others may want more leadership in the spine of the team right now.
As for the goalkeeper position, Mark Schwarzer agrees Chelsea must sign a better keeper than Robert Sanchez. The 26-year-old shot-stopper is guilty of some inconsistent form in the opening months of this season.
Should Chelsea sign another centre-half?
Colwill, 21, is still in the infancy of his senior career. Meanwhile, 23-year-old Fofana isn’t much older and experienced. Therefore, should an elite club like Chelsea be relying on two young defenders in their best line-up?
Ian Wright says Chelsea are crying out for a profile like a peak Thiago Silva, but they’re certainly not easy to find in the world right now.
There’s a strong argument to be made that investing time into the Colwill-Fofana combination is worth doing. Here is a look at how the pair have performed so far this campaign:
| Player | Match rating | Accurate passes per 90 | Tackles per 90 | Blocks per 90 | Clearances per 90 | Interceptions per 90 |
| Levi Colwill | 6.89 | 62.5 | 0.6 | 0.9 | 3.7 | 1.4 |
| Wesley Fofana | 7.06 | 52.9 | 0.9 | 0.9 | 4.7 | 1.2 |
Chelsea have gone down the path of trusting youngsters everywhere else on the pitch, so let’s see if Colwill and Fofana can continue to grow together in stature. There’s definitely potential and all the tools there for something special.
