‘So weird’… Mauricio Pochettino can’t believe what he saw in the second half of Chelsea’s win over Brighton

Mauricio Pochettino has now claimed that a number of refereeing and subsequent VAR decisions left him absolutely baffled during Chelsea’s win yesterday.

He told Match of the Day that he finds it difficult to understand why the visitors were awarded a penalty in the 10th minute of stoppage time, as well as the process involved in overturning it.

Chelsea fought for more than half the game with 10 men after Conor Gallagher continued a spell of club captains getting sent off for very avoidable reasons.

Pochettino though can be proud of the fight his players put in though, with them coming away with just their second home win of the season.

For supporters inside the stadium though, it looked as if that may be in serious jeopardy when a penalty was awarded for handball from Levi Colwill.

Replays quickly showed that the ball actually smashed the defender in the face, leaving some actually perplexed at why the decision was made.

Pochettino on VAR

Pochettino was one of those who was stunned, naming it as one of a number of moments that confused him.

He said: “Why did they give the penalty and then check VAR [for the Colwill handball]? It is difficult to understand why. It is not to complain, to criticise.

“Why was the penalty of Mudryk waiting for VAR and he gave the handball? It is so weird the way we use VAR sometimes. But, we need to be happy after a win.”

Mudryk was another player who certainly did his job, especially after the Blues went down to 10 men.

His driving run won the Blues the penalty that was converted by Enzo Fernandez, who quickly added to his first goal for the club.
