Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu continued his string of decent performances in the Carabao Cup last night.

The Blues will now face Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup quarter-final after yesterday’s 2-0 home win against Blackburn Rovers.

Mauricio Pochettino named a pretty strong starting line-up versus Championship side Blackburn, with Benoit Badiashile and Raheem Sterling both scoring.

For Lesley Ugochukwu, he’s played every minute so far of the team’s run in the cup this season.

The 19-year-old defensive midfielder was once again solid and efficient in the centre of the park against Blackburn.

Ugochukwu uploaded a post on Instagram after his performance on Wednesday night, which received a positive response from Chelsea teammates Malo Gusto and Ian Maatsen.

“This is strong,” Gusto replied in the comment section.

Lesley Ugochukwu impressing

We don’t remember too much excitement when Chelsea signed Ugochukwu from Rennes in a £23million deal (BBC) during the summer.

This may turn out to be a really shrewd signing further down the line, though.

We’re really enjoying what we’ve seen so far this season from the young midfielder, whose performances are filled with energy and potential.

Speaking via the club’s official website last month, Ugochukwu admits he used to watch John Obi Mikel when he was growing up. In fairness, we can see some similarities between him and the former Chelsea midfielder.

The teenager may find himself down the midfield pecking order right now at Stamford Bridge, but he can keep impressing when he’s thrown opportunities.

He’s competing alongside the likes of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez for a starting position. There’s also Romeo Lavia to throw into the mix once he’s back fit and available.
