Glenn Murray was left a little shocked by Chelsea’s post-match celebrations after yesterday’s win over Newcastle United.

Chelsea edged out Newcastle via a penalty shootout on Tuesday night in a thrilling Carabao Cup quarter-final.

First, there was the drama of Mykhailo Mudryk’s stoppage time equaliser to make it 1-1 and send the tie straight to penalties. Afterwards, the Blues were perfect with their spot-kicks to book their place in the semi-finals of the domestic cup competition.

There’s a semi-final tie in the New Year against either Middlesbrough, Fulham, West Ham or Liverpool.

Chelsea celebrations

BBC pundit Glenn Murray was left a little baffled by the huge post-match celebrations at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea’s players walking around the whole pitch straight after the win.

Murray told BBC Radio 5 Live: “We’ve actually just watched Chelsea do a lap of honour for winning in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. The jubilation, honestly, I’m a little bit surprised. The fans clearly need something to get behind and something to cheer. I think it’s mixed with a tinge of relief as well that they’ve managed to get there.”

In our view, Chelsea really needed to win against Newcastle to keep their season alive. There’s been unrest within the fanbase because of the incontinent results this term, so we certainly don’t mind the extravagant celebrations with supporters post-match.

Let’s remember that this is still a very new group that is looking to build that relationship with the fanbase, something that will come from nights like the Newcastle result.

It’s been very common practice at Stamford Bridge in the last couple of decades to see Chelsea blow teams away, but everything is a bit more hard work under Mauricio Pochettino and his young squad.

Incidentally, presenter Mark Chapman shared via Sky Sports (10:10pm, 19 December) that the studio at Stamford Bridge was shaking due to the wild celebration from supporters after beating Newcastle.
