Pundit Alex Crook has claimed that Chelsea should be hit hard if they are found guilty of financial misdemeanours by the Premier League.

He told TalkSPORT that the worst punishment they could get would be relegation from the top flight of English football, alongside Manchester City.

Those at Stamford Bridge will certainly have been put on note after news broke last week that Everton had been charged and subsequently punished heavily by the Premier League.

The Toffees were deducted 10 points, seeing them plunged deep into a relegation battle that they perhaps were not expecting to be in.

Many experts have warned that Chelsea could be about to be next to be sanctioned, and that the eventual punishment could stack up to be much higher than that of Everton’s.

Whether Todd Boehly and co are directly worried by this problem, Crook has claimed that the recent punishment handed to the fellow Premier League side should leave them fearing the worst.

Chelsea worst possible punishment

He said: “What’s the worst that could happen to Man City, surely they can’t go back and take titles they have won?

“Well, the worst that could happen is relegation. The same with Chelsea. The precedent has been set with Everton. If you are going to deduct one team 10 points for falling foul of one charge and you have a team that has 115 charges and are found guilty, I think relegation probably is the only punishment.”

Despite the looming threat of sanction, it has not put an end to rumours that Chelsea are going to continue to spend big in January.

A striker is reportedly top of the list in terms of potential additions, with them being strongly linked to Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney.

The latter is the most likely to be available midway through the season, with him seemingly pushing to leave Brentford as soon as possible.
