TalkSPORT pundit says Chelsea 24-year-old isn’t fast enough to play on the wing

Tony Cascarino doesn’t think Chelsea’s Mason Mount has the speed to play as a winger.

Mount, 24, is an extremely versatile player who has been vital at Stamford Bridge in the last few years.

However, the England international’s form has dropped this season, like so many of his club teammates.

The creative playmaker has played as either a No.8 and No.10 this campaign, plus he’s had stints cutting infield from the left wing.

Incidentally, he’s been ruled out by Graham Potter of Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Leeds United with a lower abdomen problem.

TalkSPORT pundit Cascarino thinks Chelsea won’t get the best out of Mount when he’s shoehorned into the side in a wide position.

With Joao Felix currently impressing in a No.10 position behind a central striker, Mount can be seen in some games working off that left flank.

He prefers to drift inside into pockets of space himself and be busy around the penalty box.

“He’s not really quick enough to be an out-and-out winger. I never feel that is Mason’s best position. I always feel he needs to be behind forwards,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.

“He’s got a great eye for a goal. He hasn’t done that as much this year as he did last year, and that is one of his biggest assets. He gets into spaces, finds a little bit of time, and is a good finisher.”

Chelsea have plenty of pace if they use new signings Mykhailo Mudryk or Noni Madueke in the wide positions, but that doesn’t solve the problem of getting Mount into the starting line-up.

The main issue right now is the Englishman looks frustrated that he can’t rediscover his best form. If he did, he would walk into Potter’s side right now.

TalkSPORT reported earlier this week it’s “highly likely” that Mount could join Liverpool this summer.

Therefore, there is a lot of uncertainty around his future as a Chelsea player right now.
