TalkSPORT pundit says Chelsea duo are the club’s best players ‘by a distance’

Andy Townsend thinks Reece James and Thiago Silva are quite obviously the best two players in the Chelsea squad.

Graham Potter is currently working with an oversized Blues squad that has cost a lot of money to assemble, which is why there are some very talented footballers on the club’s books.

However, talkSPORT pundit and former Blues player Andy Townsend isn’t too convinced by the overall squad.

He argues that Chelsea’s defenders, James and Silva, are miles better than the rest of their teammates.

“He’s (Potter) got a lot of what I would say very good players, he hasn’t got too many great ones for me. His best player is his right-back and Thiago Silva,” Townsend told talkSPORT.

“Reece James and Thiago Silva I think are the best players by a distance. It’s very early for Enzo Fernandez but, again, we still don’t know whether or not he’s going to be a rip-roaring success. We think he might but we really don’t know.”

We’re not going to disagree with choosing James and Silva as Chelsea’s best two players.

First of all, 23-year-old right-back James is a special talent to come through at Cobham.

Perhaps the biggest compliment you can pay him is the Blues look a much better side when he’s in the starting XI, which is why it’s so crucial he doesn’t pick up any more injuries this season.

Incidentally, Ian Wright recently said he thinks he’s in the top two best right-backs in the world.

As for 38-year-old Silva, he continues to defy logic as one of Europe’s elite defenders at his age.

The Brazilian centre-back is so composed and effective in everything he does, so it’s such a blessing for youngsters to learn from him.

In our view, there’s some others that can challenge to be one of the elite players in the Chelsea ranks.

Forgotten man N’Golo Kante, who’s missed most of the season so far through injury, is phenomenal on his day. In addition, January recruits Joao Felix (loan) and Enzo Fernandez are already making big impacts in the starting line-up.
