Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott has said his clash with Chelsea’s Kai Havertz in this season’s League Cup final was only a “heat of the moment” scenario.
Liverpool and Chelsea played out a gripping Carabao Cup final in February, which the Merseyside club eventually won on penalties.
The pair will lock horns again later this month in the FA Cup final, too. For Liverpool, it’s part of their quest this campaign to complete an unprecedented quadruple. There’s no doubt Thomas Tuchel’s Blues will be out for revenge, though.
It was a fiery encounter earlier in the year during the League Cup final, including one incident that saw star players Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kai Havertz confront each other. 19-year-old substitute Elliott then weighed in with a push on Havertz that sparked more confrontations among the players.
However, Elliott has played down the moment when reflecting on the incident:
“To see Trent and Havertz square up… you’ve just got to back your teammates at the end of the day. You’re there and you fight with them,” Elliott said.
“That thing with Havertz was just the heat of the moment; emotions were high for both teams as we both wanted to win. Then obviously the penalty shootout came and that’s when you let it all out.”

It’s got all the makings of being a FA Cup classic.
Chelsea are going through a very turbulent season due to the ownership saga, but it would be typical for the club to win a trophy at the end of the season. Incidentally, Roman Abramovich’s camp are reportedly still confident of a takeover being completed.
Tuchel’s side have shown up well in cup competitions during his time at Stamford Bridge, but they’ve got a recent Wembley curse to try and beat.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are a force to be reckoned with as they go in pursuit of a historic trophy haul.
It’s worth pointing out that they’ve drawn both Premier League games against Chelsea this season, though, plus needed penalties to beat them in the League Cup.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has previously shared his admiration for the current Chelsea side.
