Xabi Alonso has a quality bunch of players available for him straight away in pre-season, however some of the Chelsea stars who have not been at the World Cup are yet to be spotted in training.

Alonso got to work on Thursday with pre-season training, with the likes of Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro back in action after not being selected for their countries this summer.

Opportunities also arose for academy graduates to impress the new manager, as he looks to get a clear view on who can help him going into his first season in charge.

Seven Chelsea players who haven’t returned to Xabi Alonso’s pre-season training

The likes of Reece James, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo have not been involved due to their participation at the World Cup, but some not on international duty have also not returned.

Alejandro Garnacho, Marc Guiu and Benoit Badiashile are first team stars from last season who have not been spotted in Alonso’s early sessions.

Garnacho is being strongly linked with a move to Roma, and is clearly out of the plans at Stamford Bridge, while Guiu is also available for a permanent sale this summer.

As well as the first team trio, Axel Disasi, David Datro Fofana, Caleb Wiley and Omari Kellyman have also not been present under Alonso.

There is a broad agreement in place for Disasi to join West Ham this summer, after impressing on loan in the second half of last season.

As for Fofana, Wiley and Kellyman, the path to the first team squad looks extremely obscured, and either a loan or permanent move away awaits them.

The Blues are in need of trimming down their first team squad after not qualifying for European football next season, and therefore having less opportunities for some to feature.

At the same time, the desire is there to strengthen in a number of key positions in order to give Alonso the best chance of succeeding at Stamford Bridge.
