Even Cole Palmer’s brilliance couldn’t prevent Chelsea from suffering a Boxing Day defeat to rivals Fulham.

Cole Palmer scored his 12th Premier League goal of the season in Thursday’s festive fixture, but Chelsea conceded two late goals to lose 2-1 at home to Fulham.

Palmer, 22, weaved his way past a couple of Fulham players before providing the coolest low finish to score. Unfortunately, Enzo Maresca’s side couldn’t hold on as they lost their third league game of the campaign.

Palmer broke another Chelsea record by scoring his 26th league goal of the calendar year, which surpasses Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s tally of 25 top-flight goals in 2001.

Troy Deeney flags something worrying about Cole Palmer vs Fulham

During a conversation about Chelsea’s loss to Fulham, Troy Deeney raised a concerning point about Palmer. He claims that the 22-year-old attacker was visibly annoyed with some of his teammates during the league defeat.

“The one thing that I noticed yesterday was Cole Palmer’s frustration is starting to come out with the decision-making of people,” Deeney told talkSPORT.

“And when they’re trying to win games, it’s still really slow and passive, but he’s trying to be like, think for yourselves, just try and win.

“I wonder how he’s going to deal with teams now putting two and three on him, because that’s what’s going to start happening. How does he adapt, not getting more and more frustrated.”

In general, Palmer looks like the calmest individual on the pitch and he plays the game with such nonchalance. He’s clearly still got that burning desire to win, which he would’ve picked up from his many years as a youngster at Manchester City.

The Englishman is now operating at such an incredibly high level on a weekly basis, so it’s up to the Chelsea players around him to elevate their own games.

Chelsea star Palmer is extremely dedicated to working hard, so don’t let his laid-back attitude fool you into thinking he’s not hungry for success. As long as it’s done in the right way, it’s good to see him driving the standards and pushing his teammates for better.

Cole Palmer in the golden boot race

While Chelsea are obviously chasing team targets this season, Palmer will also be searching for individual accolades to go with that.

As it stands, Palmer sits third in the Premier League’s golden boot race, which is led by Liverpool’s goal machine. It feels like it’ll take something special for someone to outdo Mohamed Salah right now.

Maresca claims Chelsea’s Palmer may be the Premier League’s best player. He’s certainly in the thick of the conversation, but let’s see what he can achieve in the second half of the season.
