‘Unbelievable’… Rio Ferdinand says he was stunned at what he saw during Chelsea’s loss to Liverpool

Pundit Rio Ferdinand has now claimed that he was left stunned with what he saw in both halves of Chelsea’s 4-1 loss last night against Liverpool.

He told TNT Sports that he could not believe Chelsea were not awarded two penalties at Anfield in the Premier League.

The performance was no where near good enough for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, who will now be looking nervously towards the EFL Cup final later this month.

A goal off the bench for Christopher Nkunku was one of the only real positives, as they looked to mount a comeback in the second half.

They could well have found themselves ahead within the first few minutes if a penalty was given for a collision between Conor Gallagher and Virgil van Dijk.

While that one wasn’t given, a clear looking foul on the Frenchman by the same player was looked at for a prolonged period of time, before not being given as a foul.

Ferdinand was left stunned that VAR came to this conclusion on both occasions.

He said: “It was unbelievable. I can’t believe VAR hasn’t seen that and given two penalties. VAR is there to help these referees if they miss something and get it wrong. VAR is here to help.

“How they have looked at those incidents there and haven’t gone there is contact there it’s got to be a penalty. I think Chelsea were way off it tonight but both of those penalties could have been made and it would have changed the momentum of the game.”

Chelsea will no doubt have to improve their performance if they are going to put up a better fight in the cup final at Wembley in a few weeks’ time against the same opponents.
