Eni Aluko is surprised that there is so much speculation linking Conor Gallagher with a move away from Chelsea.

Conor Gallagher has been a key player for Mauricio Pochettino this season, captaining Chelsea once again last night in the absence of Reece James and Ben Chilwell.

However, rumours suggest that the Blues could actually end up selling the midfielder, something Eni Aluko is surprised to hear. The former Chelsea player was speaking about the subject on Prime Video.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the Blues will consider offers of around £50m for Gallagher.

Given his importance to Chelsea this season, Aluko is shocked to hear so much talk about Gallagher leaving west London.

On the rumours, she said: “Very surprised. Because if there was a time I thought he would go it was the summer when there was a mass exodus really. I felt in the summer too many experienced players went — [N’Golo] Kante, [Mateo] Kovacic and Mason Mount — we need experienced players so that’s why Gallagher is so important to this team.

“His energy and pressing off the ball is a big part of Pochettino’s style. He is an important player for this team, so I am a bit surprised there is so much speculation and he will be hearing about this speculation so I hope that it isn’t unsettling him. Chelsea need consistency, leadership, energy, pressing — all of these things Gallagher brings.”

Conor Gallagher sale makes sense for Chelsea bosses

From a footballing perspective, there is little logic in selling Gallagher. He is a player who Pochettino clearly values and he has been one of Chelsea’s top performers in the current campaign.

In fact, on WhoScored, the England international is the highest-rated footballer in the Blues’ squad.

However, if you are looking at things from the perspective of the Chelsea hierarchy, then of course selling Gallagher makes sense.

Gallagher can help the club to earn some money back after their recent shopping sprees, while his contract expires in 2025. They will not want to lose him for nothing, which is another reason why they could decide to sell the 23-year-old next month. It is quite disappointing that it has come down to this.
