Chelsea’s newest statement signing this summer came in the form of Joao Felix, who’s returned to Stamford Bridge for a second spell at the club.
The Blues announced on Wednesday that they’ve signed Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid on a permanent deal. It’s been confirmed that the 24-year-old attacker has penned a seven-year contract, too.
Felix previously spent a brief loan spell with the Blues in 2023, scoring four goals in 20 games across all competitions. Hopefully, the Portugal international is back now to fulfil his potential and to improve the club’s position.
When speaking on Sky Sports Main Event this week, Jamie Carragher questioned where will Chelsea play Felix. It’s going to be interesting to see how head coach Enzo Maresca addresses that and fits the summer signing into his XI.

Chelsea sources convinced by Joao Felix deal
According to The Athletic, Chelsea sources believe the signing of Felix this summer was a must because of the attacking output of other individuals in the squad.
The Blues re-signed Felix in a permanent transfer worth £46.3m (Sky Sports), so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of deal that turns out to be. It’s worth remembering that Atletico once paid £113m (Sky Sports) to sign Felix back in 2019.
Chelsea would love for him to hit the ground running and to chip in with his fair share of goals.
It’s quite obvious there was an over-reliance on Cole Palmer last year, so can Felix help burden the load? Here below is a look at Chelsea’s top scorers in the Premier League last season…
| Player | Premier League Goals |
| Cole Palmer | 22 |
| Nicolas Jackson | 14 |
| Raheem Sterling | 8 |
| Conor Gallagher | 5 |
| Mykhailo Mudryk | 5 |
| Noni Madueke | 5 |
What’s Joao Felix’s best position?
Felix is certainly an individual whose best position on the football pitch is quite difficult to pin down. The same could be said about Chelsea teammates such as Christopher Nkunku and Pedro Neto, too.
Transfermarkt has the data for the positions Felix has played in his career…
| Played as… | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| Second striker | 130 | 37 | 20 |
| Left winger | 65 | 22 | 11 |
| Centre-forward | 40 | 13 | 8 |
| Right winger | 15 | 2 | 1 |
| Attacking midfield | 12 | 6 | 1 |
We imagine Felix is most likely to suit Maresca’s system by playing either on the left wing or as a number eight attacking midfielder.
